On November 4, 2022, our Highlander family gathered for a “Topping Out” celebration, marking an important milestone in the construction of the new Porter Family Center for Innovation & Academics, when the highest structural beam is placed atop the building. At the Topping Out, Highlanders were invited to sign the beam and be part of this important moment in our school’s history. The event also included a showcase of Porter Center replicas built by Lower School students, as well as a number of hands-on innovation and art activities for guests to enjoy.

Signing and placing a beam at the highest point of the building is symbolic of our progress to date. However, as aspirations and achievement of our facility and students exceed beyond the highest beam and well into the heavens. The Porter Center can be topped off, but the achievements of our Lake Highland family will never be.
Jeff Deery ’82, Chairman of the Board of Trustees

Like most Highlanders, I’ve been amazed at the scale and pace of progress of the Porter Center. It was incredible to see Highlanders of all ages signing the beam, and I couldn’t help but be humbled and grateful the generosity and support of the Porter family, the Tillman family, the Vivar family, the Jackson family, and all the Elevate donors who’ve made this day – and this entire project – possible.
Walker Starling ’98, Chair of the Elevate Campaign
Designed by SchenkelShultz Architecture, the Porter Center is a transformational, 71,000-square-foot facility that features exceptional spaces where Highlanders will learn, collaborate, and create. General contractor Balfour Beatty began the 14-month construction in April 2022, with a projected opening in August 2023.
